Max Osawa & Tipping Point

Tipping Point blends contemporary jazz and hard bop styles with eclectic 2000s influences, performing original compositions inspired by Brian Blade, Jon Cowherd, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton, Quincy Davis, and many others. The name nods both to the precarious state of our current institutions and to the drummer’s art of swing timekeeping on the ride cymbal—colloquially referred to as “tipping.”

This album is dedicated to my loving grandparents, Sandra Turner - Barnes and Robert "Bootsie" Barnes. This album is a reflection of my life experiences put into music. Each track is influenced by personal experiences. The music expresses the feelings of Cherry Street which are both a real place and a symbolic one, where echoes of the past meet the now. Through my music I invite listeners to walk with me, to feel the triumphs and struggles, the joy and loss. This album is a conversation between who I was, who I am, and who I continue to become. My hope is that as you listen, you don’t just hear the notes, but experience the stories behind them and find pieces of your own journey to think about.
